Mr Travers will also open the event at the Burswood Convention Centre.

MPR Director General Dr Jim Limerick said the open day provides the petroleum industry with an important opportunity to hear about the latest Departmental developments and plans for the future.

"The 2002 Petroleum Open Day will let industry operators meet with Departmental representatives in a friendly and informal setting to discuss key areas of interest.

"The program will include presentations on the exploration outlook and prospectivity of the north Perth Basin and the State acreage release areas and updates on developments in safety, environment, land access, information on the Geological Survey of Western Australia's petroleum basin studies program, the Dampier sub-basin aquifer assessment and investment opportunities," said Dr Limerick.

"An exhibit will demonstrate recent developments and help focus discussions and participants can also test drive web based data access.

"I strongly urge anyone involved or interested in the WA petroleum industry to attend."

The 2002 Petroleum Open Day follows the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia's West Australasian Basins Symposium (WABS III) being held from 20 to 23 October.

Entry to the 2002 Petroleum Open Day is free, but registration is essential. People can register by contacting Kaye Smith from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources' Petroleum Division on telephone 9222 3273, facsimile 9222 3799 or email kaye.smith@mpr.wa.gov.au .
