The proposed total depth for South Galapagos-1 is 3,772 metres with the primary objective being the Jurassic Lower Vulcan and Plover Formations. The drilling rig on-site is the Sedco 703 semi-submersible.

In a statement Magellan said, “The exploration well in exploration permit WA-306-P spudded at 1am Western Standard Time on 5 October and at 6am WST [on 7 October the well] was at a depth of 1,655 metres and drilling ahead in 17½" hole.

“The well is being drilled by Antrim Energy Australia, operator of the WA-306-P joint venture, with Magellan being fully funded through the drilling of the well,” it added.

Antrim Energy is the operator and holds a 32.5% stake. The other partners are India’s ONGC Videsh Ltd (55%) which farmin in only weeks ago and Magellan (12.5%).
