Siberian oil tanker blast

Reports from Russia indicate an explosion in the engine room of the Lenaneft-2061 oil tanker dock...

The vessel, which was in the process of unloading oil products at the settlement, is owned by the Lena River shipping line. The Lenaneft-2061 was carrying 800 tons of petrol and 1,400 tonnes of diesel at the time. No fuel has leaked so far as a result of the incident.

Speaking to the Itar-Tass news agency Yakut region Deputy Prime Minister Vasily Grabtsevich said, “The fire aboard the tanker is partially extinguished. The vessel is being cooled, and after the operation the extinguishing foam will be used.”

“The accident occurred near the village and the oil storage tanks. If some fuel leaks, there will be no danger for the population. The situation is under control of the republic’s authorities,” added Grabtsevich.

The cause of the incident is currently being investigated.
