Leighton subsidiary Thiess and global construction giant Bechtel have contracts for the project which commenced in June 2003 and is scheduled for completion in early 2006.
The jetty trestle construction is more than 98% complete and feed gas will be introduced to the plant this month to begin LNG production.
The first gas was brought into the plant’s turbine generators from the beach valve in mid-September for operation of the on-site power generation units.
About 1500 workers are still employed on-site and the first LNG cargo is expected to be exported in early 2006.
The Northern Territory government has also announced that 85% of construction contracts on the $A1.1 billion Darwin City Waterfront Project will be awarded to local businesses.
Transport minister Chris Burns said during stage one of construction alone, $A300 million would be injected into the local economy and more than 1000 jobs created.
Companies to have already secured work on the project include Macmahon and Barclay Mowlem.
