The Angel facility will be the North West Shelf venture’s third major offshore production platform. The $A1.6 billion project will include associated infrastructure such as a new 50km subsea pipeline.
ABB was recently awarded contracts worth about $16 million by the Woodside-operated liquefied natural gas expansion project currently underway at its onshore gas processing facilities at Karratha, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
ABB’s scope of supply for the unmanned Angel gas platform includes medium and low-voltage intelligent switchgear and motor control centres, along with the specifically designed transformers for this particular facility.
“One of the most pleasing aspects of this project is that ABB was able to accommodate specific environmental design requirements for the transformers,” ABB major projects manager Steve Hollyoak said yesterday.
“The special transformers will use environmentally friendly Midel transformer fluid, which is readily biodegradable and non-hazardous, making it safe for use even in the most ecologically sensitive areas.”
The equipment will be designed and manufactured in ABB’s Perth and Sydney facilities.
The remotely operated Angel processing platform will be in 80m of water, about 49km east of the existing North Rankin production facility. Hydrocarbons will be produced through one processing unit with a capacity of up to 800 million standard cubic feet of gas a day and up to 50,000 barrels of condensate a day.
