Coles has refused to comment on the matter but the Australian Financial Review has said the 158 Victorian petrol stations which trade under Shell will be rebadged in the 24 hours before the offer begins.
Industry talk suggests Coles is planning a standard discount of 4.5 cents per litre, if shoppers spend more than $30 on groceries, with further discounts if more groceries are bought.
Woolworths is understood to be ready to counter the offer with CEO Roger Corbett saying earlier this week he would be a vigorous competitor on the petrol front with his 290 Petrol Plus outlets, which he is planning to expand to 450 across the country.
An Adelaide Petrol Plus station was offering 12 cents a litre for a recent two month period in conjunction with the opening of a nearby Woolworths supermarket.
