More PetroVietnam executives arrested

Four senior officials of Vietnam’s state-owned PetroVietnam have been arrested for allegedly accepting kickbacks during the construction of the Thi Vai liquefied petroleum gas pipeline and terminals. The facilities located in the Ba Ria-Vung Tau province have performed poorly since construction.

The four men are PetroVietnam Engineering and Construction Co (PVECC) director Nguyen Trong Nhung, PetroVietnam Investment and Consultancy Co director Dang Huu Quy, PVECC Constructions & Repair factory director Dang Dinh Binh and former PetroVietnam vice director projects management board Bi Van Tu.

The officials have been charged with irresponsibility and poor management which has led to the Thi Vail facility losing around US$71 million through shoddy construction and stoppages due to leaking gas. It is estimated another US$9.7 million will be needed to repair the facility.

The arrest of the men brings the number of high ranking petroleum officials under arrest for corruption to 10. Six others from PetroVietnam and Vietsovpetro had been arrested earlier this year.
