China begins subsea pipeline to disputed field

A report in Yangzi Wanbao newspaper alleges China has already begun construction of a 470km undersea pipeline which will have its terminus at the controversial Chunxiao gas field in the East China Sea.

As reported earlier by EnergyReview.net, China and Japan are at loggerheads over the field, which Japan says infringes into its Exclusive Economic Zone; a zone China does not recognise.

According to the Yangzi Wanbao, “The first phase of construction is slated for completion in May next year, with 2.5 billion square metres of natural gas per year to be carried by the pipeline to Zhejiang Province and Shanghai City.”

“The Chunxiao field comprises four gas fields spread over a total area of 22,000 sq km [and] Japan has repeatedly expressed concerns over China tapping natural gas under the sea close to the disputed line between the countries’ economic waters. Japan argues it has a right to claim its share if resources are found in the Chinese zone straddling the intermediate line,” it added.
