The order was placed by Tararua Wind Power Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of TrustPower Limited.
It will consist of delivery, installation and commissioning, remote control systems as well as a five-year service and maintenance agreement.
Shipment of the turbines will begin in late 2006, and commissioning of the wind power plant will take place during the first half of 2007.
"Vestas is extremely pleased to see the introduction of the V90-3.0 MW platform into the strong New Zealand market and further develop our relationship with TrustPower," said Vestas Asia Pacific A/S president Thorbjørn N Rasmussen.
Vestas previously supplied 103 units of V47-660 kW turbines for the Tararua I and II projects.
The latest order has not affected the Vestas Group's expectations for 2005, it said.
Last July, Tauranga-headquartered TrustPower announced it had resource consents for 31 turbines of the 40 turbines sought for Tararua Stage 3, with the option of installing another nine turbines subject to satisfying aviation safety requirements for the nearby Palmerston North Airport.
The initial Stage 3 should start producing power before the end of 2006, with the full expansion completed in time for winter 2007 – supplying enough electricity to power about 42,000 homes. TrustPower's existing Tararua windfarm has 103 turbines capable of producing about 62MW.
Stages 2 and 3 of the Tararua windfarm were made possible under the New Zealand government's grant of carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol.
