70m-high windmills planned for Tokyo waterfront

The Danish-made windmills will be built on a landfill site near breakwaters in Tokyo Bay and government officials hope to have the windmills operational by the end of March.

The windmills will be managed by J Wind Tokyo, a company co-launched by Toyota Tsusho and Electric Power Development.

Once operational, the two new windmills will be capable of generating a maximum of 1,700 kilowatts. The planners expect the windmills to generate a total of 2.5 million kilowatt-hours annually - enough energy to provide electricity to about 800 households. The power generated will be sold to Tokyo Electric Power Co.

According to government officials, as of March, windmills nationwide generated a total of 310,000 kWh. A government outline that promotes measures to combat global warming suggested this figure be increased to 3 million kWh by the end of fiscal 2010.
