According to the professor, "no one can deny that reserves are limited [and] we can no longer afford to burn all the reserves known today because the earth's ecosphere simply cannot bear it." He also added that uranium reserves could be depleted in less than 50 year's time.

Speaking out at the opening of the 13th IAS conference being held in Kuching, Sarawak, Majali warned that the world needed to consider making use of renewable energy and that time was of the essence. He also reiterated his stance that studies on a sustainable future must take into consideration that energy and energy needs are at the core of such a life.

In the opinion of the professor, the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro failed to address the core linkage between energy and environmental sustainability. He feels that, "the core of the solution to the global ecological crisis is the adoption of renewable energy."

The four-day conference is joint organised by the Jordan-based IAS and the Sarawak Islamic Council and was set up to discuss two themes, Energy for Sustainable Development and Science for the Future of the Islamic World and Humanity.
