WA Cabinet reshuffle sees Dawson lose environment

On Thursday, the WA premier Mark McGowan unveiled his new ministry, which sees Bill Johnston retain the sought-after mines and petroleum, and energy portfolios.

While minister Johnston will remain resources minister, there have been several changes, with environment minister Stephen Dawson losing his portfolio to take on new responsibilities.

Dawson will instead hold the portfolios of Mental Health, Aboriginal Affairs, Industrial Relations, and become deputy leader of the Legislative Council.

The new minister for environment will be Amber-Jade Sanderson, who holds the portfolio alongside climate action and commerce.

Member for Morely, Sanderson, a former trade unionist, was expected to take a role in the Cabinet.

Premier Mark McGowan will take on the dual role of premier and treasurer, a move not seen in decades, after the retirement of veteran parliamentarian Ben Wyatt.

"I'm very confident we have a strong team, with a breadth of experience that will work hard every day to govern in the interests of all Western Australians," premier Mark McGowan said.

The WA state election count is still ongoing. Labor is set to claim 53 out of the 59 Legislative Assembly seats and take control of the Legislative Council.
