For the first time, Australia's decommissioning industry can view data on all offshore O&G facilities and assets in Australian waters, and see where they are in their lifespan.

The Forward Outlook portal is available for ENB subscribers to test in the above panel.

The momentous development has been made possible thanks to the launch of Decommissioning Forward Outlook - a first-of-its-kind, interactive tool launched by Centre of Decommissioning Australia (CODA)

The new portal, developed with the support of the WA government, provides granular detail on all of Australia's offshore O&G infrastructure.

CODA's Francis Norman

CODA managing director and CEO Francis Norman said no one has been able to access to a collated view of Australia's future decommissioning timeline and scope.

"With this new tool regulators can ensure they have the staffing needed to process applications promptly.

"Operators can see what the total likely workload looks like and if necessary, adjust some of their plans to ensure the best access to skills and services.

"The technology and service companies can plan for the future through the accessible view of the total pipeline of potential work.

"And the all-important workforce can see where future career opportunities exist in the industry," Norman exclusively told Energy News Bulletin.

"The platform's built entirely on a suite of publicly available but voluminous and dense data sets and uses a combination of AI and manual reviews to make the relevant data held in the base documents easily and conveniently accessible for users through a single dashboard."

He noted that the visibility of upcoming work is a critical enabler for all parts of the decommissioning industry.

Built for the future

The new platform allows users to explore asset characteristics for fixed and floating facilities, including subsea infrastructure, pipelines, and wells, in tandem with the upcoming offshore decommissioning workload and project timelines.

Norman says the next decade will see a very significant volume of both onshore and offshore decommissioning work.

"This view has been reaffirmed as we built our Outlook dashboard.

"Both the opportunity and challenge will be in delivering the anticipated volume safely and efficiently while also building domestic capability and knowledge.

"If we do it right Australia has the potential to become one of the global leaders in efficient decommissioning," he said.

According to CODA, the data on the platform will be updated quarterly based on publicly available datasets.

What's next?

"We're also looking to expand the data pool by progressively rolling in data covering onshore decommissioning which will be undertaken on a state-by-state basis," Norman said.

"The flexibility of the core platform also allows us to progressively incorporate other adjacent data, such as offshore wind plans, as they become available.

"Essentially, with the platform now built we can reasonably quickly and easily incorporate new and valuable features to ensure the industry gets access to the data it needs."
