While Papua New Guinea shares a common border with one of the Indonesian territories, Irian Jaya, it is located in the furthest east group of islands and about 4000 miles east of the epicentre, Interoil said in a statement.
In addition, InterOil’s refinery is located across the protected harbour from Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby which is on the southern side of the main island, further insulating it from the effect of tsunamis.
“We are saddened at the loss of life and property that has affected the many citizens of Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka,” said InterOil CEO Phil Mulacek.
