The Chief Minister met the Prime Minister John Howard in Sydney to make the case for $600 million in taxation relief and infrastructure assistance.

However, her case was weakened because the Sunrise partners have yet to formally determine whether there is sufficiently firm domestic demand to justify bringing gas onshore.

It is understood Mr Howard told the chief minister he understood the national significance of development of the Timor Sea gas reserves. However, without a firm proposal on the table, it was not possible for the Commonwealth to consider financial assistance.
