The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) plans to inject about 80 million cubic metres of gas per day into the country's southern oil fields by the end of the Iranian calendar year, with plans to transfer a total of three billion cubic meters to the southern reserves.

NIOC says the level of oil production in five major oil fields, Aqajari, Gachsaran, Marun, Ahwaz, and Bibi Hakimeh, has doubled since the early 80's but they may soon be depleted.

In order to maintain the current production rate and increase the country's share in world markets it has been recommended that gas injections into the oil fields be increased.
