Pakistan eases fuel oil imports

Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has announced that it would cancel a one...

According to a Ministry of Petroleum statement, production at local refineries was more than sufficient to meet domestic demand, fuel stocks were sufficient for about 100 das and, because of a heavier than expected rainy season, the country has high reservoir levels for hydropower generation.

However, according to S.M. Ilyas of Karachi Container and Engineering, "The tender was cancelled because the government has banned imports until December." And, while he felt that would re-tender when its stocks of fuel oil were diminished, Ilyas believes that the Ministry would continue to discourage fuel oil imports until some time next year.

Pakistan usually imports around five million tonnes of fuel oil in the fiscal year to June. Annual demand is usually around 8.5 million tonnes with the balance coming from domestic production.
