Brightstar Environmental, a subsidiary of Energy Development Ltd, said it has agreed to put on hold the current Environmental Review and Management Plan submission for the Gosnell site of its proposed solid waste to energy recycling facility (SWERF).
"Although this may mean a delay in this project, it is an important step in Energy Development's longer term business strategy in this State. It will also ensure our development activities are complimentary with the future direction of waste management in Western Australia." said Brightstar chief executive officer, Mr Bill Lazarus.
Last month, Brightstar suffered a setback when the WA Minister for Energy, Mr Eric Ripper, blocked plans to build its Gosnells SWERF facility due to community concerns over noxious emissions.
Nevertheless, the Premier's office did confirm that the Government intends to work with Brightstar to find a suitable site for a SWERF facility, which Brightstar claims will help reduce the need for landfilling of domestic waste by up to 90% and generate enough 'green' electricity to help WA meet its renewable energy targets.
