The firm has been appointed to provide detailed engineering and procurement services for the tankfarm, piperack and flare units of Phase 1 of the plant in Sturgeon County, about 45km northeast of Edmonton, Alberta.

The work, which starts immediately, will be performed by WorleyParsons in its Edmonton, Toronto and Mumbai offices.

The North West Redwater Partnership is a joint venture between North West Upgrading and Canadian Natural Resources subsidiary Canadian Natural Upgrading.

Phase 1 of the $C8.5 billion Sturgeon Refinery project is designed to process 50,000 barrels per day of bitumen.

WorleyParsons CEO Andrew Wood said this would be the first greenfield refinery built in Canada since 1984.
