The first seismic hoses from Trelleborg were delivered in January 2005.
With an inner diameter of 45 centimetres, the seismic hose is made of rubber reinforced with polyester and can be folded up for storage on board. Its bright yellow colour, making it easy to spot in the water.
The measuring equipment is towed behind vessels suspended from the floating hoses, which are up to 30 metres long.
From one to eight hoses can be trailed behind a ship.
Powerful signals are beamed from the ship to the seabed, tracing the various layers of rock several kilometres below.
The sound waves are reflected and received by the measuring equipment hanging from the seismic hoses. Based on the information received, a computer draws a “map” of the rock structure beneath the seabed.
