“The WPC's 24 forums, 12 research and forecast papers, 18 roundtables, 12 keynote sessions, and its special sessions all address the main technological, managerial and scientific achievements that will make the industry and the world we live in more sustainable over the long term,” Gossen said.
“The theme of the 18th WPC – “Shaping the energy future: partners in sustainable solutions” – reflects the industry’s role in meeting energy demand in the future and recognises the commitment of other key stakeholders to the principles of sustainability in an economically affordable, environmentally sound and socially acceptable approach.”
The congress’ upstream section focuses on innovations and advances in new technologies that contribute towards sustainable solutions. It includes presentations on exploration and production in ultra-deep water, as well as oil sands and old fields.
A downstream block addresses refinery optimisation, fuel quality and customisation for sustainable energy supply, with papers and posters discussing hydrogen and catalytic distillation.
The natural gas and renewables presentations show that the industry is moving from strictly oil to a new balance in the energy matrix to meet growing demand, through coalbed methane, LNG and renewable energy sources.
The “managing the industry” stream addresses key global issues, including climate change, water management, revenue transparency, the rapid growth in sustainability reporting and operating in zones of conflict.
