Shell NZ chairman Paul Zealand said the event partnership was based on Shell’s commitment to social performance, whereby the company aims to have a positive impact on the communities in which it operates. Shell was a key sponsor of the first Taranaki WOMAD in 2003.
“WOMAD is an important event in the Taranaki arts and culture calendar. The event in 2003 provided a tremendous boost to the region and was well received.
“As the majority of our upstream assets and operations are in Taranaki, the region is important to us as well. Therefore, we believe it is vital that we make a positive contribution to the arts and culture of the region in the same manner that our operations support the region’s and the country’s economy.
“The event fits in with our approach to promoting diversity as it creates an understanding and appreciation of international cultural diversity through the music and artists from around the world. It is also an event that families can enjoy and we are pleased to be an event partner in 2005,” Zealand said.
Woodstock legend Richie Havens will be leading the way when Womad comes to Taranaki for the March 11-13 festival after his scheduled appearance in Womadelaide, the South Australian WOMAD, during March 4-6.
