LNG (LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS)

Kimberley LNG project clears purchase hurdle

THE West Kimberley Power Project (WKPP) has been cleared to proceed with the conditions of a 20-year power purchase agreement between Western Power and Energy Developments now being satisfied.

Under the agreement, Energy Developments will build, own and operate five new power stations for the towns of Broome, Derby, Camballin/Looma, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek.

The four largest stations will be fuelled by natural gas transported as LNG from a 160 tonnes per day plant to be built near Karratha.

Formal finance documentation for the project has been completed by a banking consortium of ABN AMRO, ANZ Investment Bank and National Australia Bank. Major contracts have been awarded for the supply of the skid-mounted LNG plant, LNG storage tanks, LNG road tankers and Caterpillar generator sets.

Agreements have also been made for the supply of natural gas to the LNG plant and gas transport via the Dampier to Bunbury natural gas pipeline. The majority of the material planning and permitting approvals have been received and the remainder are expected within the next three months.

About $A150 million will be spent in the initial construction of the power stations, LNG plant and road transport fleet.
