Under the name Cabrillo Port the BHPB proposal would be a permanently moored Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) with LNG being stored in traditional storage tanks and transported via an undersea pipeline into a local pipeline system.
The FSRU design features three LNG storage tanks capable of storing the equivalent of 6 billion cubic feet of natural gas and will contain eight vaporisers to enable the conversion of up to 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.
Anticipated average send-out will be approximately 800 million cubic feet per day, or almost 15% of what Californian daily gas consumption.
With the project currently rated as a 50-50 chance of gaining approval it is thought the supply contract with Australian gas producers would be worth around $15 billion to the Australian economy.
As an added bonus for Australian LNG producers American representatives, including California’s Secretary for Resources, Mike Chrisman, are to visit Australia in the next month to look at environmental and safety issues associated with the LNG industry.
