Santos, SkillsTech team up on CSG training

SANTOS has formed a partnership worth more than $1 million with SkillsTech Australia to address skills shortages in the CSG sector.

Santos, SkillsTech team up on CSG training

"This partnership between the Santos GLNG Project and SkillsTech Australia will train up to 70 Queenslanders for the booming CSG sector," SkillsTech Australia institute director Mary Campbell said.

"Our partnerships with industry, such as this one with Santos, are essential for our continued growth and ensure that we remain the public provider of choice for trade training in Queensland.

"This new centre will provide opportunities for Queenslanders to enter the thriving CSG sector and gain Australian-standard qualifications to work within this sector, today and into the future."

The six-month course will provide trainees with a mixture of theory and field training and will provide them with the skills to be employed in CSG operations including operating and maintaining gas wells, compressor stations and associated water facilities.

"Santos GLNG Project will then provide trainees with a job and continuing support to complete their Process Plant Operations Certificate III through 18 months of on-the-job experience," Premier Anna Bligh said.

She added 10 trainees would learn the skills required to work on the Santos GLNG Project 42-inch gas transmission pipeline.

"These trainees will learn how to operate high-pressure, large-diameter gas transmission pipelines and will gain the knowledge and practical skills aligned with Certificate III in Gas Industry Operation."

GLNG president Mark Macfarlane said the new centre would help develop the skilled workforce needed to support the emerging CSG-LNG sector.

"We want to ensure we grow the right amount of local expertise for the long-term operation of this new and significant industry. I know our project alone will look to employ around 1000 people on an ongoing basis after the intensive construction phase is completed."
