CSIRO looks for collaborators to help unlock deep-sea stranded gas

THE CSIRO’s Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship is calling for expressions of interest in submitting a proposal for a Collaboration Fund Cluster on Subsea Pipelines.

The cluster on Subsea Pipelines would contribute to work that Wealth from Oceans is undertaking to develop technology to help unlock Australia’s significant deep-sea stranded gas resources.

CSIRO is seeking scientific research activities which compliment its own expertise in developing subsea oil and gas production. In particular, it is looking for collaborators with expertise in structural analysis for subsea pipelines, underwater monitoring, detection and correction of corrosive and erosive wear and multiphase flow. The date for final submission of a proposal is February 26.

The National Research Flagships are partnerships of leading Australian scientists, research institutions, commercial companies and selected international partners.

Their scale, long time-frames and clear focus on delivery and adoption of research outputs are designed to maximise their impact in key areas of economic and community need. Wealth from Oceans is one of six National Research Flagships.

As part of the strategy to engage excellent researchers from outside of CSIRO in the Flagships, a Flagship Collaboration Fund launched in 2005 provides funds for collaborative work to deliver results that contribute to achieving the goals of the Flagship.

One component of the Collaboration Fund is Collaboration Fund Clusters. These are formed of consortia of research partners, including Australian universities, state research agencies, other publicly funded research agencies and industry (although industry partners are not eligible to receive direct funding), and these clusters aim collectively to contribute towards achievement of a major goal of the relevant Flagship.

Flagship clusters will be funded for about three years at a minimum of $1 million of Flagship Collaborative Research Program funding over the life of the cluster, with an expected co-investment of matching cash and/or in-kind support by the partner institutions/organisations.

Further information about the proposed collaborative research area, including the cluster specification, is available at http://www.csiro.au/csiro/content/file/pf6e,,.html

Wealth from Oceans is proposing that a workshop on the Subsea Pipelines Cluster could be held in late January or early February, most likely with groups meeting in Sydney and in Perth, linked via video conference. The workshop will bring together all possible proponents and enable them to form appropriate groups(s) for submission of a coordinated proposal(s).

For further information or to express interest in participating in a workshop contact: Kate Wilson, science coordinator, Wealth from Oceans at Kate.Wilson@csiro.au or 02 9490 8448.
