Latest deepwater Mauritanian well unlikely to be commercial: Roc

PRELIMINARY evaluation of wireline logs indicates that commercialisation of the latest offshore Mauritania exploration well, Labeidna-1, will be difficult given the thinness of the sands and a water depth of more than 1,200 metres, according to joint venture partner Roc Oil.

The ‘Stena Tay’ rig drilled Labeidna-1 in the PSC B permit. Acquisition of wireline logs, including downhole pressure measurements and fluid sampling, began once it reached final total depth of 3080 metres.

The well intersected an oil-bearing interval comprising an interbedded series of thin sands and claystones.

“Additional wireline logs will be acquired to quantify the significance of this discovery,” operator Woodside said in a statement.

“A further announcement will be made when this analysis has been completed. Following wireline logging, the well will be plugged and abandoned as planned.”
