The company today said after reaching a total depth of 3299 metres below rotary table, operator Dana failed to find adequate hydrocarbons.
“Analysis of the wireline and drill data indicates that the well has not encountered any significant hydrocarbons,” Roc Oil said.
“As at 0600 hours (local time) on 25 September 2006 preparations were underway to plug and abandon.”
On completion of Flamant-1 the Atwood Hunter will drill a second Dana-operated exploration well, Aigrette-1 in Block 7, before returning to Woodside, it said.
The joint venture is aiming for a potential 5 trillion cubic feet gas target off Mauritania and has previously said a discovery here could lead to a liquefied natural gas development.
The Block 8 joint JV comprises Dana (24%), Gaz de France UK BV (31%) Wintershall AG (25%), Hardman (18%), and Roc Oil (2%). Gaz de France recently boosted its stake from 13.5% to 31%, acquiring additional equity from Dana. Roc has an option to increase its interest to 5%.
