Queensland department switches to green power

QUEENSLAND'S Department of Natural Resources and Mines says it will begin purchasing "green power" to run its facilities.

Queensland department switches to green power

Green power is electricity provided by service providers that comes from renewable sources such as wind, solar or biomass.

The department will take advantage of about $A300,000 of savings achieved via a recent contract signed with powerco Energex, which sees the it entering a sales agreement outside the government-regulated uniform tariff.

Although green power is more expensive than standard "black power" the savings will let the department purchase 10% of the power supplied under the contract as green power, specifically powering facilities at Indooroopilly, Sherwood and Redbank.

"Natural Resources and Mines is committed to ensuring its electricity contract is the best value for money," minister for natural resources and mines Henry Palaszczuk said.

"However, the savings made on the new contract mean that we can purchase green power and help to reduce greenhouse emissions."

Palaszczuk said he felt NRM should "do its bit" for the environment given the nature of the department.
