The Qatar order was placed by a consortium comprising Qatar Electricity & Water Company, International Power, and Chubu Electric Power. The order is SPG's first turnkey project in the tiny, gas-rich country.
With its partner Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, SPG will build the Ras Laffan B combined-cycle power plant, which includes three SGT5-4000F (previously called V94.3A) gas turbines and two steam turbines, in addition to providing the associated electrical and instrumentation and control equipment.
Commercial operation of Ras Laffan B is scheduled for May 2008. Siemens says the plant will have an installed capacity of approximately 1000MW and the seawater desalination plant supplied by Doosan will produce approximately 27,500 cubic meters of drinking water daily.
"Ras Laffan is the first turnkey order for Siemens PG from fast-developing Qatar. Together with the successes in Dubai and Egypt we have thus succeeded in further consolidating our leading market position in the Middle East and Egypt," said Klaus Voges, president of Siemens Power Generation.
The Dubai order was placed by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), requiring Siemens to supply three SGT5-2000E (previously called V94.2) gas turbines and the instrumentation and control equipment for a gas turbine power plant in Dubai.
The SPG consortium will also oversee installation and commissioning. After the start of commercial operation in early-2007, the plant will have an installed capacity of 400MW.
Elsewhere in the region, Siemens PG is to supply two SGT5-4000F gas turbines and auxiliary systems for the El Kureimat gas turbine power plant in Egypt, located 90km south of Cairo. The order was placed by the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and the Upper Egypt Electricity Production Company.
