Electricity reform gets PM's support

With news that electricity demand could exceed supply in a few short years, resulting in California-style power shortages, Prime Minister John Howard has once again reaffirmed his commitment to reforming the country's electricity market.

In a report by the Australian Financial Review, the PM told the Electricity Supply Association the Government has not decided on what model it prefers for a national regulator.

"I assure you my government is committed to examining and ... implementing the recommendations of the Parer review," the PM said.

It is understood the PM will submit a blueprint for electricity market reform - including the creation of a national regulator under the auspices of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission - to the Council of Australian Governments in June.

Last week, the PM attended the first meeting of the newly-created ministerial oversight committee on energy, at which he was briefed extensively on the competing state and territory positions.
