Origin gets good gas flows from new formation at Myall Creek

ORIGIN Energy has achieved the first confirmed commercial gas flow from the Basal Rewan Sandstone in its 100%-held Myall Creek field in Surat Basin block PL174, the company said yesterday.

After being drilled underbalanced using nitrogen to a 1925-metre depth, Myall Creek-5 started flowing gas through the flare line at about 21 million cubic feet per day on a one-inch choke at 816 psi, Origin said.

“This is the first confirmed commercial flow of gas from the Basal Rewan Sandstone within the Myall Creek Field,” executive general manager – exploration Rob Willink said.

“At this stage it is too early to determine the level of reserves which may be being addressed by this well.”

Initial drilling began using the Century 7 rig in June this year, with intermediate casing (178mm) set at 1,840 metres. The rig was released just over a week later.

Drilling re-commenced on November 26 with the BJ Services Coil Tubing Unit (CTU).
