Trefoil-1 spuds in Bass Basin

OPERATOR Origin Energy began drilling the gas exploration well Trefoil-1 in the Bass Basin, offshore Tasmania in the small hours of Saturday morning using the ENSCO 102 Jack-up drilling rig. The well is expected to take about 30 days to drill.

The well is located in the Tasmanian off-shore exploration permit T/18P within Bass Strait, about 37 km west of Yolla Production Platform, 114 km southwest of Wilson’s Promontory, and 59 km north-northeast of Three Hummock Island.

Planned total depth of the well is 3114 metres below sea-level. The objective reservoirs are sandstones in the Eastern View Coal Measures that are the same age as the main Yolla Field gas reservoirs.

Participants in T/18P are: Origin (operator) 41.4%; AWE Petroleum Pty Ltd 22.6%; CalEnergy Gas (Australia) Limited 23.5%; and Wandoo Petroleum Pty Ltd 12.5%. First Australian Resources is claiming a 0.9% over riding royalty.
