DRILLING

Pohokura deviation well into offshore to begin soon

An appraisal sidetrack well into the southern end of the Pohokura gas-condensate field in offshore Taranaki is scheduled to start in late July or early August and be drilled from an onshore site north of New Plymouth.

Pohokura operator Shell Todd Oil Services Ltd has contracted Parker Drilling's Rig 188, which has been drilling the Huinga-1B sidetrack well, to drill the Pohokura well in PEP 38459. The well is scheduled to be drilled from the onshore Pohokura South well site, drilled in early 2001, and deviated offshore.

The aim of the sidetrack well is to ascertain the southern extent of the field and further evaluate the geological and petrophysical properties of the area. The well may also be tested to determine the maximum sustainable production rate for a typical deviated development well.
