DRILLING

Nitrogen approach for Churchie 1 re-entry

A light handed approach to drilling techniques - using nitrogen - will be used by Mosaic Oil and Santos when they re-enter the Churchie 1 well over the Christmas period. The well first flowed 1.3 million cubic feet of gas per day in 2001 before it is thought formation damage curtailed the production rates.

To be called Churchie 1A, the new well will use the nitrogen drilling system to drill down near the current well near Surat in south eastern Queensland.

After Churchie 3 flowed 20 million cubic feet per day using nitrogen drilling, Mosaic has held great hopes for re-entering previously drilled wells using this approach which, when handled correctly, causes far less formation damage than traditional drilling muds.

The Churchie 1A drill will use the 'Century 1' drilling rig, after currently completing two nitrogen-drilled wells for another explorer on an adjacent lease.
