Cairn makes Rajasthan strike

UK firm Cairn Energy Plc has made an oil and gas discovery in Rajasthan. According to its chief executive Bill Gammel, "We have encountered hydrocarbons at RJ-Q-1 exploration well in Block RJ-ON-90/1." This marks the fourth discovery by the British firm.

Despite this discovery, the company plans to suspend the well for additional testing of two wells - the deep Fatehgarh section using a service rig - and the shallower Thumbli via its own dedicated well. The deeper well drew gas and condensate at depths of between 3112 to 3174 metres and the shallower section encountered a log-evaluated gross hydrocarbon interval of 250 metres in RJ-Q-1.

Gammel feels that the discovery will prove beneficial for his company. "Over the coming months, we will be commencing exploration wells more than 120 km apart and we are confident of the potential for Rajasthan to become a new core producing area for Cairn."
