When completed Thunder Horse will be the largest semi-submersible platform in the world.. The rig is being constructed at the Daewoo Yard in South Korea and topsides installations will take place in Mississippi, USA. The drilling drives project will be completed within six months from date of order. Thunder Horse will be the biggest oil field ever discovered in the US.

ABB's AC Drilling Drive System provides the customer a ready-made solution for easy installation and excellent functionality, and includes a water-cooling system for the frequency converters, transformers and brake resistors. By selecting water-cooling, customers save space and weight as compared to traditional air-cooling systems. This in turn leads to a more cost-effective product for the customer, said ABB. The company has been a pioneer in this new drilling drive solution technology. Previously, this technique was mostly used on cruise ships. ABB said it will also will deliver 24 hours/7 days worldwide service for the facility.
