Agility Project Logistics

With offices in Port Moresby and Lae the company has developed strong relationships with local companies providing transport, depot facilities and logistics.

In May, 2009, Agility was awarded a contract to provide comprehensive logistic solutions for the biggest project ever undertaken in Papua New Guinea, the $US19 billion ExxonMobil PNG LNG Project, an integrated development commercialising the gas resources of Papua New Guinea.

Agility's services included global and domestic freight forwarding, customs clearance services, road transport and the provision of an air bridge solution. Between 2009 and 2016 Agility, in joint partnership with local transport providers, delivered 16,565 loads of construction freight to the project site at Hides, a distance of 784 kilometres on the Highlands Highway from LAE.

Other major resource projects during Agility's almost 30 years, included contracts with Oil Search, Horizon Oil, Marengo Mining, Simberi Gold, Interoil/Puma Energy, Lihir Mining Company, Newcrest and Eaglewood Energy while completed projects include Kutubu Petroleum for Chevron, the Lihir Gold Project at New Ireland, the Gobe Oil expansion for Chevron, the Moran Oil Project for Chevron and the Kainantu Gold Project.

Tony Raats, Agility's General Manager PNG, said the company's experience in Papua New Guinea for almost 30 years had given it an excellent understanding of local cultures and the political environment.

"We have acquired an in-depth knowledge of the logistics support role required for the oil and gas, and mining industries for both the construction and operational phases here in Papua New Guinea," he said. "It has also enabled us to understand and work with government and local communities to ensure their values and concerns are properly recognised and addressed.

"Our head office for Global Integrated Logistics is headquartered in Switzerland and worldwide we have more than 22,000 employees in more than 560 offices across 100 countries. We have brought the experience gained from our international footprint to supplement our PNG operations enabling us to supply efficient supply chains in the most challenging environments."

As well as being a global leader in project logistics, the company also offers international freight forwarding, shipping agency, customs and quarantine clearance, domestic freight forwarding by road, sea or air, container sales and hire, container packing and unpacking facilities, vessel, barge and aircraft charter, land transport, third party logistics and a bonded area.

A 2,300sqm warehouse and 9,000sqm usable hard stand area are located at Porebada, Napa Napa, close to the Motukea Wharf where international and domestic vessels berth in Port Moresby, while in Lae the company has an approximately 3,000sqm including under bond warehouse and 8,500sqm of usable hard stand area within the Guard Dog Security Compound at 11 Mile on the Highlands Highway. Both facilities in Port Moresby and LAE offer the ability to expand our warehousing footprint, based on demand.

The Port Moresby facilities include offices and a laydown area for containers and bulk break cargo and a fumigation area sanctioned by customs are attached to the Lae facilities.

"The Lae facilities are within one of the most secure compounds in the Morobe Province. During the early parts of the initial construction our Lae office has been  responsible for providing charters to support the Manus Island Regional Processing Centre," Tony Raats pointed out.

"Our wholly-owned Pacific Container Line Agencies provides charter representation and services for a range of companies and can arrange pilotage, berthage, stevedoring, fuelling, water supply, waste disposal and security changes. If required we can also manage crew changes including immigration requirements, meals, accommodation and translation and medical services."

Agility provides freight forwarding, 3PL Warehousing, distribution and project logistics operations for many of Papua New Guinea's biggest companies.

More recently Agility has been working with PNG's major telecommunications business to enhance the supply and distribution to meet the growing infrastructure needs in Papua New Guinea, helping to "Connect" PNG.

Over the past few years, Agility has worked with a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider to deliver cargo required for mobile phone network upgrades to some of the more remote areas of Papua New Guinea.

To deliver this unique logistics solution, Agility PNG has worked hand in hand with its local PNG subcontractors providing transport when required around the National Capital District or more regional areas by ship with final delivery by barge.

Agility' staff has ensured that the customer receive their goods on time and on budget.

These upgrades of the existing infrastructure are critical to cope with the increasing demand on telecommunications and to connect PNG families and businesses.

Agility is also managing warehousing and logistics solutions to a major mobile phone network provider in the PNG market.

"Our dedicated and trained local PNG staff are utilising our state-of-the-art information technology system to provide up-to-date stock reporting and inventory controls that allow the clients to login from anywhere in the world to get up-to-the minute live information," Raats explained.

"Agility PNG has implemented truly global solutions, implemented high levels of on-the-ground safety and worked with our PNG team to implement a "Be Safe, Stay Safe" culture to ensure all of our team go home safely from work.

"Our focus in PNG previously has been a mixture of large scale project logistics solutions with large scale operations, joint ventures in Shipping Line Agency, to domestic freight requirements and now leading the way in 3PL warehousing and integrated IT solutions for our customers.

Steven Lofaro, Vice President Project Logistics, Asia Pacific commented, "We see our growth in the small to medium enterprise market, and our sustainability will come from investment in technology and keeping ahead of digitisation advances in our industry"

Moving forward, Agility CEO Australasia, Frank Guerra said: "The APEC forum will coincide with 30 years of Agility in this country, so we are extremely proud to be involved.

"As a global player, we remain dedicated, focused and willing to share the growing knowledge and technological advancements that are currently taking place in the logistics and supply chain world. It will be on the back of these digital advancements that will ensure we stay at least another 30 years.

"Congratulations PNG."
