Twelve heavy-fabrication apprentices are the first to take part in the You're on Your Way program at Challenger Institute of Technology.
Challenger Institute general manager training services Jill Jamieson said the program was an exciting collaboration between it and CKJV - the CB&I/Kentz joint venture that is delivering a $3.2 billion mechanical, electrical and instrumentation contract at Gorgon.
"The fabrication and electrical trades are among the most sought after in Western Australia," she said.
"By working so closely with industry, Challenger Institute is playing a key role in supporting initiatives that attract people to work in these industries."
Challenger Institute said the program provided flexible learning opportunities for apprentices in the resources sector, within the framework of Challenger's SMART apprenticeship model.
"The model utilises existing skills, and industrial experience and knowledge to enable apprentices to complete their apprenticeships based on competency, rather than time served," Ms Jamieson said.
"Last year, 28 fabrication apprentices were involved in the SMART model and gained their competencies at an accelerated rate. This year, the number of apprentices has increased by more than 60 per cent."
You're On Your Way will target trainees and apprentices in skill areas including heavy fabrication, electrical, mechanical, scaffolding and rigging.
Challenger said the heavy-fabrication apprentices received 10 weeks of institute-based training before starting the apprenticeship program in the workplace.
