Organised by the Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR), the annual Golden Gecko Awards for Environmental Excellence has reached its 15th year after starting in 1992.
DoIR director general Jim Limerick said a Golden Gecko Award recognised the commitment of a company or individual far beyond basic compliance with environmental regulation and helped build an organisation's reputation as a good corporate citizen with a responsible attitude to the environment.
“The awards also increase employee understanding and ownership of environmental programs and help ensure environmental strategies are adequately resourced,” Limerick said.
“By recognising advances and innovations in environmental practice by the mineral and petroleum industries, the department seeks to encourage continuous improvement throughout the industry.”
