Eastern Star expands on Gunnedah prospects

Eastern Star Gas looks set to expand its NSW coal bed methane (CBM) prospects after the company’s seismic program discovered a number of new leads and anticlines within the Gunnedah and Darling Basin permits.

Eastern Star expands on Gunnedah prospects

The program covered 506km in the 100% owned New South Wales licence areas PEL 238 and PELs 433/434 in the Gunnedah Basin, and PELs 8/422/424 in the Darling Basin.

Data acquisition in PEL 238 targeted both existing anticlinal leads and new prospects such as the previously identified Lynwood Prospect, located five kilometres southwest of the producing Coonarah Gas Field.

“The location has been selected for an exploration wildcat well targeting conventional reservoirs, Lynwood-1, to be drilled as soon as Bohena South-1 is completed. The Lynwood Prospect is mapped to be of a similar size to the Coonarah Gas Field, which has certified proved and probable (2P) gas reserves of 11.3 petajoules,” said ESG.

In addition to the delineation of a number of new and previously identified leads, the company said a new and large anticline, named Brigalow Park, has been discovered three kilometres southeast of the Coonarah Gas Field and south of the connecting pipeline to the Wilga Park power station.

“Brigalow Park has an interpreted vertical closure nearly 10 times larger than the Coonarah Gas Field. An exploration well targeting conventional sandstone reservoirs is to be drilled on this new prospect immediately after Lynwood-1.”

Results from PEL 433/434 have indicated that the sedimentary section is much thicker and more widespread than anticipated, particularly in the western part of the licence areas, thus significantly extending the prospective area.

The newly acquired data from PEL 8/422/424 is in the early stages of seismic processing.
