Gas shortfall tipped next month for Beijing

BEIJING, which is supplied natural gas by the Municipal Gas Corp (MGC), will apparently suffer a 23 million cubic metre per day shortfall next month, according to a report broadcast on China Radio International. It appears the demand is 4 million cubic metres more than MGC can supply.

It is understood MGC is aware of the situation and has begun an emergency project to build more gas pipes in the city. It has also apparently signed deals with “some oil fields and gas supply companies” to make up the shortfall but the report did not specify which firms.

Beijing routinely hits a gas usage peak in December during the height of winter. During this period, some 80% of the city’s gas supply is used for heating.
