Petron, Caltex offices hit by grenades

Unknown attackers have fired grenades into the headquarters of Petron Corp and Caltex in Makati City, Philippines. The explosives did not go off and no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The first attack was at local refiner Petron Corp. The offices of Caltex came under attack minutes later.

Both buildings had been attacked in similar fashion in April this year and Metro Manila police Director Avelino Razon Jr and military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual have put the blame on Communist Party of the Philippines’ militant New People’s Army (NPA) wing.

The Communists, however, have refused to confirm or deny the allegation.

Speaking to the media spokesman Gregorio Rosal said, “We have no confirmation yet [and I have] the New People’s Army to verify if their troops were responsible for the attacks on the Petron Corp and Caltex Philippines Inc.”

“But you know, given the numerous oil price hikes, many people want to get even with these oil companies, even symbolically,” added Rosal without elaborating further.
