Malaysia: 5% of electricity generation to be green by 2005

Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Water & Communications, Shaziman Abu Mansor, has revealed his Government’s intention to have at least 5% of electricity generation in the SE Asian nation to come from renewable resources by 2005.

In a statement Shaziman said, “The Government will intensify the utilisation of renewable energy, with particular attention given to biomass-based cogeneration systems for the production of electricity and usable energy.”

“Under the 8th Malaysia Plan, the Government has also introduced the fifth fuel in our energy policy, which includes renewable energy such as biomass, biogas, landfill gas, solar photovoltaic and mini-hydropower [and] renewable energy will need to be tapped to reduce our dependence on conventional energy sources comprising fuel oil, natural gas, coal and hydropower,” he added.
