Canadians plan export pipeline for Japanese markets

A report in the Japanese media indicates a Canadian consortium, led by Enbridge Inc, has announced plans to lay a 1,200 km pipeline in Canada which will be used to export oil bound for Japan and other Asian countries. The oil is oil extracted from oil sands.

According to the Nikkei English News, “Enbridge has begun discussing with Japanese trading companies and oil companies whether they will invest in the C$2.5 billion (US$1.89 billion) project linking the oil-producing area of Edmonton, Alberta, with Canada’s west coast and buy its oil.”

“The Canadian companies plan to start building the 75 cm diameter pipeline in 2007 and begin transporting 400,000 barrels a day of oil by the end of 2009,” added the report.
