China v Japan, Round Three

China has proposed a compromise to jointly develop a gas field which lies on the contentious naut...

Following the meeting of China’s Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and his Japanese counterpart Yoriko Kawaguchi in Qingdao, Li asked Japan to consider a joint development of the project which Tokyo has been in uproar over.

As reported previously in EnergyReview.net, the Japanese government has been unhappy with a Chinese consortium constructing a natural gas rig in the East China Sea near Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

According to reports published in the Japanese media, Kawaguchi expressed her concerns on the project and pressed her Chinese counterpart for more prompt details of the operation, stating, “Beijing must first provide the details” before any compromise or deal can be made.
