“The bodies of seven subcontract workers from the Wah Soon Marine Pte Ltd carrying out work on the Almudaina [have] been recovered. They were all foreigners but their identities could not be immediately released,” said a company spokesperson for Singapore’s Keppel.

“The fire broke out shortly after 1.00 pm. We are still investigating. We believe that the fire started at the starboard side of the vessel. The tanker was not carrying any oil at the time of the fire as it was undergoing repair.”

The Singaporean police later issued a statement stating the dead were “five Malaysians and two Indian workers who were welding inside one of the vessel’s compartments”. The identities of the dead men were not revealed at press time.
