Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) had earlier announced plans to build a 1,000 km pipeline from Mundra to Delhi.
Despite murmurs in the industry over “duplication of resources”, BPCL has announced there will be no such duplication as both pipelines travel via different routes. According to a BPCL spokesperson, “HPCL’s proposed Mundra-Delhi pipeline will pass through Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, the one proposed by BPCL will travel across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.”
“The construction of the pipeline was justified in view of the corporation’s proposed Bina refinery project, which will have a capacity of six million tonnes a year, in Madhya Pradesh.
“As most of the products produced at the refinery will be sold in north India, the pipeline will be required to evacuate these products from the refinery,” said the spokesperson.
“[Furthermore,] HPCL wants to set up pipelines in the northern region to reduce its dependence on Indian Oil Corp for product supplies,” added the spokesperson.
The MMI extension is expected to involve the laying of an additional 800 km of pipeline from Manglia to Piyala. The pipeline will terminate at BPCL’s gas bottling plant in Palwal.
