PetroChina pipeline to Beijing gets red star

The Chinese government has given its stamp of approval on PetroChina's plans to build a US$1.6 billion natural gas pipeline to Beijing. Slated for completion in September next year, the Beijing pipeline will transport around 12 billion cubic metres of gas per annum to China's capital city.

However, a tenth of that amount will be for the northern city of Tianjin. PetroChina has signed an agreement to supply the northern city - via a link from the Beijing pipeline - with 1.2 billion cubic metres of natural gas. The company has also signed an agreement with the local government of Shanxi province to supply around 2.1 billion cubic metres.

The 860 km pipeline will source its gas from the gas fields of Shaanxi province.
