Hyundai crane makes big splash

A Korean crane driver is lucky to be unscathed following a mishap when the boom of his machine gave way, dropping its 40 tonne load into the water off the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) yard.

No casualties were recorded in the accident which occurred near the site of fabrication of ConocoPhillips Bayu-Undan topsides.

A Hyundai spokesman said the 10,000 tonne capacity mobile crawler crane was working on unstable ground which was thought to be responsible for the accident.

The load the crane was carrying struck a loadout barge when the boom and part of the crane body gave way, but caused only minor damage to the vessel.

HHI engineers are working on replacing the damaged crane.

A ConocoPhillips staffer who was at HHI at the time said the crane had a load on the hook when it tilted sideways. He said the driver was lucky to be alive as the crane cabin was heavily damaged.
